The OANP is sponsoring an Oregon Lobby Day March 28th,
Wednesday (spring break). We will leave in the
morning and head to Salem, OR for the day and receive
updates on our bills and visit legislators. Who can
come? Anyone who has an interest in advancing the
profession. You will be coached and given talking
points. Legislators love students and their
enthusiasm. If you haven't had a chance to get
involved with activities that advance naturopathic
medicine, this would be a perfect time. We will also
have a brief training for those that are interested.
Please let me know if you would like to participate
and I will send you the specifics about time, attire
and transportation.

Thanks,
Leah Hollon, ND4

Legislative Update: Senate Bill Passes Out of Committee to the Senate Floor

On February 28, 2007 Senate Higher Education Chairman, Senator Kenneth LaValle and his committee reported S2790 out of committee. Even better is that there were zero negative votes against the bill. This is the direct result of your support! Thanks to our online email tool, 700 emails were sent in 3 days to members of the Senate Higher Education Committee.

Thank you for making this a priority. We cannot succeed in this effort without your help.

The NYANP Legislative Committee is busy planning execution of the same swift movement in the Assembly. We await appointment of the chair of the Assembly Higher Education Committee. The bill will then need to be placed on the committee agenda, passed out of committee, and then pass two other committees in the Assembly – Ways & Means and then Codes – before it goes to the Assembly floor. The Senate will likely wait to vote on the bill until there is some movement in the Assembly. The legislative session goes through the third week of June.

We need your continued help now more than ever to educate legislators and staffers on the need to license Naturopathic Doctors. We will be in touch about support memos for the Assembly.

This is how we are asking NYANP members and all supporters to help:

1. Volunteer. Volunteer 1 to 5 hours per week to the NYANP to assist with projects related to the licensure effort.

2. Contact your legislators. Meet your legislators locally, call, fax, and/or email and encourage friends, neighbors and patients to do the same. If you already met with them, then update them regularly. Let us know when you have a meeting scheduled and we will send you a legislative packet for your meeting.

3. Patient Support Campaign. Assist your patients in meeting, calling and writing their legislators. You can make the online letter writing tool available to patients in your office, you can a patient with you to meet your legislators and/or you could send a notice to your patients via email.

4. Contribute. Contribute to the NYANP by sending a donation and by encouraging your patients and family to become supporting members ($40). (Membership forms are available at www.nyanp.org )

On behalf of the Legislative Committee, I sincerely thank you for your participation in the licensure effort.
